This month, one theme kept reflecting back through the lens of my camera: togetherness.

In a season marked by political tension, social fatigue, and the daily noise of urgency, I kept returning to quiet truths found in shared space, shared voice, shared movement, and shared joy.

It began at the Latino Excellence Awards at the Massachusetts State House. Teachers, poets, journalists, and community advocates were recognized for the critical work they do to lift others. What struck me was the warmth of the moment. People leaned in. Hands clasped. Laughter and cheers filled the marble hall.

I had the joy of meeting and interviewing the brilliant Puerto Rican musician Fabiola Méndez, whose cuatro music filled the space with rhythm and reverence. The event, championed by Representative Andy Vargas and Senators Lydia Edwards, Liz Miranda and Pavel Payano, reminded me how cultural pride and civic leadership can nurture resilience at the heart of community.

Just days later, I was at the Arnold Arboretum for the 2025 MassQBall, a celebration where art, memory, and movement intertwined. Under a golden afternoon sky, Mar Parrilla and her ensemble, Danza Orgánica, performed a tribute grounded in Puerto Rican heritage.

Mar danced a poem for her father while her drummer followed her movements with steady, ancestral rhythm.

When she extended her hand, inviting the audience into the dance, people joined without hesitation. Her performance was a living reminder that healing is a circle we step into together.

Not far from that circle, another colorful gathering formed. YABÁS, led by Isaura Oliveira, offered a healing ritual of Afro-Brazilian Orisha dance. Dancers twirled in vibrant skirts, water splashing as they moved with spirit and intention. Gourds shook, songs rose, and color pulsed across the grass. The performance was both art and ceremony. A blessing. A collective remembering.

Later in October, I was invited to document Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley’s speech at the #NoKings rally in Boston, where she called on us all to “Give a Damn”—to show up for democracy, for each other, for the future. I watched her move through the crowd with tenderness, pausing for conversations, hugs, listening. She reminded us that activism lives not only in speeches but in how we hold space for one another.

I also captured joyful togetherness in quieter moments: a youth literacy celebration hosted by Frugal Bookstore at Roxbury Community College, featuring NYT bestselling author Jason Reynolds; and a Halloween dog costume parade in Downtown Crossing, where laughter floated like confetti and strangers smiled in shared delight.

Whether in resistance or celebration, each scene was grounded in the same core gesture—people showing up to be with one another.

At Bridgebold, we often say storytelling begins with listening, noticing, and creating with care. But this fall, I saw clearly that community begins with presence. Being here. Being in the now together. Choosing to move toward one another with generosity.

Togetherness isn’t the absence of difficulty. It’s the decision to reach for one another despite challenges. It’s about deciding to make space for each other, to show up, to build forward.

When we gather with intention, we create more than a moment. We shape a future worth arriving in.

Last week, I had the opportunity to document an intimate gathering hosted by entrepreneur and Club9 member Sophy Wang, held inside the wildly vibrant Museum of Modern Renaissance (ModRen) in Somerville, Massachusetts. The event, titled Signal_001: (AI × Deeptech), was unlike any tech mixer I’d experienced. It was reverent, colorful, and soft. More than a professional gathering, it felt like a serendipitous creative encounter. And that feeling only deepened the more I learned about the space and the people gathered in it.

Club9 is a self-described home for the “lifelong curious.” It’s a community of scientists, creatives, deeptech founders, and polymaths gathered to nurture discovery and reflection outside the bounds of traditional networking. Designed to foster intimacy and mutual inspiration, Club9 events skip the panels and keynotes. Instead, members arrive ready to share ideas in more ambient, spontaneous ways. No name tags. No PowerPoints. Just music that inspires dance, warm connection, and open circles of generative conversation.

This is exactly what greeted me when I stepped into the ModRen. The museum’s cathedral-like structure pulsed with kaleidoscopic color. Its walls, ceilings, and beams felt alive with sweeping strokes of inspired art, layered with mystical symbolism. The space is the life’s work of co-founders Nicholas Shaplyko and Ekaterina Sorokina, the artistic duo painting in the style of “Mystical Realism.” Over decades, the married couple transformed this former Unitarian church into a living artwork. Each painted panel and every curving form seems to speak to both the heavens above and the soil beneath our feet.

I wandered through the enormous space with my camera, capturing moments of quiet awe and easy exchange. Club9 attendees drifted between clusters of conversation, soda water in hand, as silk-soft Hip Hop and R&B songs warmed the room. People swayed, laughed, and looked up in wonder—many of us visibly stunned by the sheer scale and color that surrounded us.

Then something unexpected happened: the museum’s event director approached me and offered a full tour of the space. I accepted without hesitation.

As we moved through the halls, he shared the museum’s calendar of events and snippets of its history. I learned that the building had once welcomed Paramahansa Yogananda, the pioneering yogi and author of Autobiography of a Yogi, who introduced yoga teachings to the American public in 1920. According to the ModRen website, this was the very place where Yogananda gave his first U.S. talk, officially bringing yoga to the West. I stood still, stunned by the convergence: here I was, photographing a next-gen salon of art, tech and life science innovators in the same space that had helped spark a century of American spiritual seeking.

The lower level of the museum held even more wonders: oversized furniture, sculptures, lush plants, and curious fixtures. Moving from room to room felt like wandering through a living organism.

The museum’s event director told me about the weekend yoga gatherings held here, where practitioners sit in near silence, surrounded by golden-orange murals and bathed in sunlight pouring through a semi-circular room of windows. He invited me to return during daylight, and I imagined it might feel like stepping into sunbeams and sitting with time itself.

Some stories only reveal themselves when you pay close attention to place. That’s something I’ve come to trust through Bridgebold. It’s a practice shaped by curiosity, by arriving open, and by allowing the story to unfold through people, texture, movement, sound and light. Being in that space, surrounded by thinkers and builders in conversation beneath murals filled with meaning and myth, reminded me why I pick up my camera. The Club9 gathering filled the room with ideas and connection. More than simply documenting a gathering, it felt like being in rhythm with something vivid and shared.

It’s rare to find a gathering that weaves disciplines with such creativity and ease. Rarer still is a place that holds both cultural and spiritual resonance—where creatives and researchers share ideas beneath murals of cosmic rebirth, and where the lineage of yoga and art continues forward through music, technology, and quiet reflection. The Museum of Modern Renaissance holds that kind of presence. Club9 brings that kind of community.

This event was an absolute delight to document. It reminded me how powerful it can be when place, people, and purpose align. Moments like these don’t just produce great photos; they shape how we imagine, connect, and build. I left the Museum of Modern Renaissance energized by the creative exchange, the warmth of Club9’s community, and the quiet invitation to keep looking closer. These are the stories I want to continue to tell, stories rooted in presence and possibility, where imagination becomes action and collective vision takes form. The seed is the moment. The bloom is the future we create from it.

Mid-August in Massachusetts, and the air pressed heavy on my shoulders, thick with summer heat. I arrived at a shaded trailhead near Chestnut Hill to meet up with Elevate Youth on one of their end-of-summer excursions. The day’s challenge: rock climbing. By the time I caught up with the group of middle schoolers from Dorchester, they were already halfway up the cliffs—scaling tall, jagged rocks like pros.

Chaya Harris, Elevate Youth’s executive director, met me in the parking lot with her usual warmth and firm, steady energy. We walked beneath tall trees toward a towering rock wall where her team and climbing partners from the Greater Boston Climbing School had rigged up multiple climbing challenges. Some ropes were anchored to beginner paths meant to build comfort and rhythm, while others traced steeper, more complex climbs that demanded strategy, adaptability, and focus. Wherever you looked, there was a way to try something new.

When I arrived, the kids were on a lunch break—lounging on rocks and camping chairs, unwrapping sandwiches packed earlier that morning by Chaya and her team of staff and volunteers.

A few of the children had wandered up a nearby hill to sit shoulder to shoulder on a sun-warmed boulder, trading stories as they ate beneath the trees. The air hung heavy with ninety-degree heat, but their energy remained light, their laughter effortless.

You could feel the comfort between them—not built in a day, but shaped over a summer of shared experiences. For some, the bond went back even further. Fishing. Skiing. Camping. Each memory surfaced in conversation like a badge of honor. These weren’t simply outings; they were formative experiences that shaped confidence, character, and a wider sense of possibility.

On this particular trip, Elevate Youth partnered with Boston Centers for Youth and Families to bring a group of middle schoolers from Dorchester out for the day. Many of the kids were returning participants. As they stepped forward for on-camera interviews with me, they recalled previous adventures with Elevate Youth: skiing down snowy trails, casting fishing lines into quiet lakes, setting up tents under the stars or in the rain. Each memory was offered like a badge, like evidence of what they had seen, done, and learned through these experiences. Their voices lit up not just with excitement, but with ownership. They weren’t just joining in; they were building and becoming. They were growing their own story archives of accomplishments, one trip at a time.

As lunch wrapped up, the first climbers stepped forward. One girl, brimming with anticipation, jogged over to the harnesses and got clipped in. She moved with confidence—finding cracks in the rock, placing her feet with precision, pushing upward with practiced strength. In minutes, she reached the top. “You got this!” her friends had shouted as she climbed. And when she reached the top, they erupted with cheers. She descended gracefully, eyes already scanning the next climb.

That first ascent sparked something. A quiet ripple. More kids stood up, tightening helmets, exchanging glances, scanning the heights above them. One girl lingered at the base, studying the wall. Her expression was a question. She turned to her instructor.

“What if I fall?” she asked.

“I’ll catch you every time,” he said, tugging gently on the rope between them.

“Are you sure?”

“I promise.”

She nodded, took a breath, and stepped forward. Slowly, cautiously. Her hands searched for something solid to hold. Her footing slipped, but she steadied. About halfway up, she paused and called down, “Okay, I think I’m ready to come down now.”

Her instructor smiled. “You’re so close. Just a few more steps.”

From below, her peers called out: “You’re almost there!” “Keep going!”

She looked back up, gauged the final stretch. Then, with a slight shift of her weight, she reached for a hold just out of her comfort zone. A grin broke across her face as her hand landed, sure and steady. She climbed on. And then, she was there. At the top. “Yes!” Her voice rang out, echoing through the trees.

That moment of joy, disbelief, and pride lingered in the air long after she touched back down. One by one, the others followed. Each climber brought something unique: a spark of courage, a burst of laughter, or a steady focus. And when someone faltered, there was always a voice from below to remind them they weren’t alone. “It’s okay! Keep trying!”

Even the kids who chose not to climb found meaningful ways to join in. They filmed their friends on phones, tested their balance on a low-to-the-ground tightrope set up by Waddy Stryker, Elevate Youth’s longtime outdoor instructor, or held onto the shoulder of Kate Doan, a volunteer mentor, as they stepped onto the line for the first time. All around them, mentors climbed, spotted, coached, and encouraged—never pushing, always inviting, and having just as much fun as the kids themselves.

You could feel what this meant. It wasn’t just a break from routine or a chance to be outdoors. It was an opportunity to be seen, supported, and challenged in a setting that asked them to trust: their own strength, the people holding the rope, the possibility that they could do something they hadn’t yet tried.

This is the heartbeat of Elevate Youth’s mission: to provide transformational outdoor experiences for youth from Boston’s underserved neighborhoods, nurturing leadership, curiosity, and connection to the natural world. And this is where Bridgebold finds resonance—in documenting stories not as an observer from the outside, but as a partner in presence. As a listener. As a learner. My aim in this collaboration is not to amplify stories that already speak volumes, but to honor them, slow them down, and offer them back in their full complexity, beauty, and truth.

Small hands gripping rock. Nervous questions answered with presence and care. Cheers rising from the forest floor. These moments on the cliffside are powerful fragments of time—worth documenting, worth preserving. Not because they’re extraordinary, but because they remind us of what becomes possible when trust and courage meet. These kids rose, each in their own time, each in their own way, and it was a privilege to witness it.

Before a child catches a fish, they first have to cast the line. And before that, they have to believe they can.

On a hot summer day in July, I watched a group of young people from across Boston gather at a picnic table overlooking Lake Cochituate. The air shimmered with heat. The lake stretched out in front of them, calm and patient. On the table, small cups of live bait wriggled and popped, tiny movements drawing curious eyes closer.

The kids leaned in, wide-eyed, while Elevate Youth mentor Waddy Stryker explained how to bait a hook and prep a fishing line. Laughter bounced between them—some giggling nervously, others brimming with excitement—all energized by the unfamiliar yet thrilling challenge that awaited.

Elevate Youth’s mission is clear: to provide transformational outdoor experiences for youth from underserved neighborhoods, nurturing curiosity, leadership, and connection with the natural world. This is not just about recreation. It’s about reimagining what’s possible for young people who may not have regular access to green spaces or wilderness mentoring.

Earlier that morning, the group had visited a farm in Concord. They petted goats, learned about feeding and caretaking, and observed how animals roam and rest in the sun. Some of the kids cradled rabbits in their arms, giggling as small noses twitched against their hands. Now, still buzzing from that experience, they sat lakeside, ready for the next step in their outdoor adventure: learning how to fish.

When Waddy asked for a volunteer to bait the first hook, a young girl shot her hand into the air without hesitation. She rose from the bench, calm and focused, her concentration unshakable. Picking up the worm, she found its center and threaded it onto the hook perfectly—on the first try. Her pride was visible in her posture. This wasn’t her first time. She’d learned this skill before during a previous Elevate Youth outing and was now leading her peers by example.

A boy stood up next, grinning as he playfully introduced himself as “Waddy Stryker.” The group burst into laughter, some shouting, “That’s not your name!” He held onto the joke for just a moment longer before grabbing the fishing rod and walking to the water’s edge. His first cast was shaky; the line tangled. But on his second try, he adjusted, his form steadier now. He looked over his shoulder, brought the tackle back, and swung it forward. The line arced cleanly through the air and landed in the lake with a soft splash. Then came the first catch of the day.

One by one, the rest of the group followed. Each child stepped forward to try their hand—baiting hooks, casting lines—their eyes bright with a mix of nervousness and determination. With every tug of the line, a cheer went up. “Look! I caught one!” someone shouted, their eyes sparkling as a small fish wriggled at the end of the hook.

At first, the catches were tiny—guppies twisting and squirming as the kids, with guidance from their mentors, carefully unhooked them and tossed them back into the water. But as the afternoon went on, the fish got bigger, and the children’s confidence grew.

Even when no fish bit, they stayed at the water’s edge, casting and re-casting, eyes trained on the surface, learning patience with each ripple.

Some of the kids began the fishing expedition by introducing themselves and admitting that their favorite thing to do was stay home and play video games. Others nodded in agreement, offering the titles of their latest obsessions. Yet here they were, in ninety-degree heat, counting fish, trying new techniques, and celebrating each other’s catches.

Success wasn’t measured by the number of fish caught or by how large they were. Instead, it was measured by how much they improved with each try, how bravely they attempted something unfamiliar, and how fully they showed up in the moment.

I stood beside them, observing their approaches, occasionally asking questions, and listening to their stories as I captured documentary photographs and footage of determined fingers, steady hands, lines flying through the air, and fish dangling from hooks.

The still images preserved smiles mid-laugh, brows furrowed in concentration, and bursts of joy when the line tugged and another fish broke the surface. These aren’t just snapshots of outdoor play. They are portraits of growth and learning, captured as it unfolded.

There’s something quietly beautiful about watching a child learn in real time—especially when that learning happens in nature, far from the usual noisy routines of city life.

Each cast of the line became a small act of perseverance. Each baited hook, a test of patience and skill. The laughter and cheers from the group reinforced the idea that learning, when allowed to unfold naturally outdoors, can be joyful, shared, and celebrated—not something measured only by outcomes, but by trying new approaches and strengthening the process with each attempt.

These moments remind me why this work matters. Why storytelling matters. There is power in noticing the small, transformative shifts that happen when young people are trusted to lead, encouraged to try, and given access to experiences they may not otherwise have.

This day on the lake was made possible by a simple but profound combination: the kids’ own curiosity and can-do spirit, and the gentle, steady support of the mentors who stood beside them as they tried, failed, recovered, and tried again. These Bold Hour photographs are still-life portraits of partnership—between possibility and guidance, between openness and trust.

Before a single foot hits the mountain trail, before the laughter, the scenic views, or the circle around the fire, there’s the quiet, focused choreography of preparation. Backpacks packed. Gear sorted. Snacks counted. Sunscreen sealed. Every object, every label, every list checked thoroughly: care, in motion.

This summer, Bridgebold is spending time with Elevate Youth, a Boston-based nonprofit connecting young people from local city neighborhoods with the natural world through year-round outdoor excursions and long-term mentorship.

The goal for this collaboration is to slow down and show the heart work that makes each of these unique outdoor experiences possible. Because the story of a camping trip doesn’t begin on the mountain. It begins here.

It begins on folding tables stacked with gear. In conversations between staff who know that the smallest details; dry socks, working flashlights, allergy-friendly snacks—can shape a child’s entire experience. These behind-the-scenes moments may not look dramatic. But they’re where trust begins.

At Bridgebold, we believe in storytelling that doesn’t rush. That notices. That honors the labor behind the joy. We see every frame as a doorway into deeper understanding, not just of the story, but of the values and relationships behind it.

These moments of preparation, the packing, the planning, the pause before departure, is storytelling too. And it’s worth holding up to the light.

Bridgebold’s collaboration with Elevate Youth isn’t just about creating content about their work. It’s about experiencing their mission with them and co-creating stories that shine with authenticity in every frame. That means being present. Listening first. Honoring the rhythms of their process. And showing up with the same care they bring to every youth participant they serve.

For those participants, each packed bag holds more than gear. It holds proof that someone thought ahead. That someone made space for their voice, their safety, their growth. That someone believes in their ability to lead and wants them to succeed before they even set foot on the trail.

This is the kind of storytelling that fuels us at Bridgebold. It’s not promotional. It’s personal. It’s not performative. It’s collaborative. And it reflects our core belief: that intentional media can amplify the real work happening in mission-driven spaces, not by glossing over it, but by showing it with care.
